In the words of the late, greats Eddie Pola and George Wyle, it’s the mooost wonderfulll tiiime…of the yeaaar. And no, I’m not talking about Christmas, that’s a whole other sleepless holiday that I have yet to get to. I’m talking about football and MLB playoff season!
Now, I LOVE me some sports, especially football season. Even more specifically, all things Wisconsin. I’m a cheesehead, I know how to Bucky, and I always cheer for the Bratwurst in the sausage race. (If you’re from Wisconsin, you know what I’m talking about.) For those that don’t speak ‘Sconnie, let me translate. I’m an avid fan of the Badgers, Packers, Brewers and Bucks. (Milwaukee Bucks, not you, Tampa.)
Although I’m out on the east coast, I do my best to watch all the Packers, Badger and Brewers games when I can. The only problem with this is the time change. (I'm Eastern Time.) That, and my admitted self-induced anxiety when my teams play poorly, it’s wreaking havoc on my sleep.
Here is a prime example -- Sunday night was Packers vs. Falcons, which the Packers won, (5-0 baby!) but they had a rough start. How? Well, the offensive line took a mental vacation and couldn’t hold the line and protect Aaron Rodgers for ANYTHING. I lost count of how many times Rodgers was sacked. Before you knew it, it was 14-0 and things were not looking good. Being a passionate fan (read above) combined with the fact that the game didn’t end until 11pm EST, (with an AWESOME interception by Green Bay’s Peprah, ahthankyouverymuch,) you’d think a Packer win would be as comforting as a warm glass of milk, but no. My mind was racing and my attempts at sleep were feeble, at best.
Now, jump to Monday night for the second NLCS game between the Brewers and Cardinals. I won’t even go into details, but let’s just say that the Brewers lost big and by 11pm, I was so angry with what I was seeing, that I changed the channel to try and forget what I had just spent the last few hours watching. I’ll let you guess how I slept that night. Here's to hoping they play better tonight...
Bottom line, I love my teams, almost to a fault. I wish I could emotionally separate myself from how well they play or not, but I can’t say that’ll happen anytime soon. For now, I guess I’ll have to live with my crazy sleep schedule until February (when the Packers win the Super Bowl.) :-)
Oh, but then there’s NCAA basketball…
So long, sleep. Parting is such sweet sorrow…
